Des Moines is full of great photo opportunities; you just have to know where to look. From spots near Drake University to the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, and a few locales in-between, these are the best places to take your family pictures any time of year.
1. Drake University
You don’t have to be an alumnus of Drake University to appreciate its well-manicured campus grounds. In fact, the university provides countless photo ops, especially near the reflecting pool and agora. This spot on campus combines architecture, landscape and water, and makes for a great setting for family photo holiday cards.
2. Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden provides a picturesque setting for your family photos. From season to season, the garden comes alive with a bouquet of beautiful blooms. So, whatever location you choose, from the Wells Fargo Rose Garden to the Meredith Terraces, your photos will blossom with pops of color.
Guests are encouraged to take photos such as candids or family snapshots. However, when conducting professional photography on-site, guests or photographers are required to pay a location fee.
3. Historic East Village
Des Moines’ Historic East Village is one of the original commerce areas of the city. This area encompasses some of Iowa’s most significant buildings, many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the charm of the Historic East Village is alive and well.
You can find brightly colored brick walls, stunning murals and even playful sidewalk art in this part of town. For a playful collection of photos, dress up your family in bright, bold colors and patterns and get out of your comfort zone by working in some playful poses for the camera.
4. Rotary Riverwalk Park
This destination park serves as an engaging play space for children and families. The Rotary Riverwalk Park is located along the west bank of the Des Moines River — and it’s pretty hard not to miss. Not only does its architecture stand out, but the larger-than-life fishing bobber on the park playground is unmissable.
Kids will love to play here, and you will love taking your photos here, too. For a playful set of photos, dress up the family in fishing shirts or dress shirts with a fishermen theme. The giant bobber will make for a great backdrop.
5. John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park
This year, the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park will celebrate its 10th anniversary. This Des Moines park features artwork from 24 of the world’s most celebrated artists. The 30 artworks located within the park set the scene for some terrific photo opportunities.
However, touching, sitting on or climbing on any of the sculptures is not allowed. The sculpture park is easy to access and is well-landscaped, with trails and pathways that wind through its 4.4 acres. Food and beverage are allowed inside the park, so consider a picnic-themed shoot to capture memorable moments that you and your family can cherish for years to come.
