Pinning images on a Pinterest board is fun and helpful when planning a dream event, but did you know you can create an actual physical idea board without a Pinterest account?
The easiest way to start a real Pinterest board (also called an idea board, an inspiration board, or a mood board) is to collect your items in a cardboard box. Remember, you don’t have to limit yourself to photos or magazine cutouts. You can include three-dimensional items on your mood board.
The five most popular reasons people start boards are:
1. Planning a Wedding
The best thing about creating a physical inspiration board for your wedding is that you can amass fabric samples, flowers (real or artificial), and invitation card stock, and pin them all on your board so you can see, touch, and smell them. No logging in required.
2. Losing Weight
Many people find an inspiration board helpful on their weight loss journey. Not only can you pin before and after photos, but you can tack up nutritional labels for easy reference and even attach a motivational bikini. Not a photo of a supermodel in a bikini—a real bikini that you purchased and will fit into at the end of your weight loss journey.
3. Career Change
Are you considering a career change? If so, this might be a board you’ll want to keep at home, not at work. Fill it with inspirational quotes, employment statistics, and photos of people actually doing your idea job.
An oversized checklist can be a concrete and motivating way to track your progress. Check off each required step to show you’re moving towards your desired career.
4. Saving Money
If saving money is your goal, putting together an eye-grabbing idea board can help you achieve it. Print out pie charts that break down your spending and saving trends to help you see when you might save the amount of money you need for a car, your retirement, or whatever.
Glue a money clip to your inspiration board and clip every spare dollar you have until you have fifties and one-hundred-dollar bills clipped to your board.
5. Vacation Time
An added bonus of a vacation idea board is that you can store receipts and important documents right on the board. Attach different colored envelopes and file receipts in one, potential itineraries in another, and passport and visa information in another. That way, when the travel day finally comes, you’ll have everything where you can see it and reach it.
But, of course, there are many more than five reasons for creating a mood board, including:
Gift Board
It’s often easier to fix other people’s problems than your own. If you know someone who is struggling to lose weight, save money, or get a new job, you can make an idea board as a gift.
Remember, there’s no need to be judgmental. Just present the facts in an inviting and visual way to help your friend see how he or she can manage whatever issue it is by taking small steps.
Work Board
Many people have idea boards at work. What better way to motivate your staff or show your bosses that you’re serious about your job, than posting your idea board by your desk?
Not Just for People
It can be a great idea for you to make an idea board for your pet. Post training tips, as well as sweater or other clothing ideas. And, if you happen to have a chowhound, you can include pet dieting tips.
Winter Blues
Some folks crave sunshine and just feel blah during the grey and cold winter months. A bright and cheery mood board with sunny, inspirational, and colorful photos can help lift anyone’s mood.
If you are visual and tactile, perhaps an actual idea, inspiration, mood board might work better for you than a virtual board on Pinterest. Why not try it? You have nothing to lose — and a whole lot of ideas to gain.
