It is always exciting to discover new designers, follow their developments, and careers. For this reason, in 1993, the British Fashion Council founded New Generation (NEWGEN), an international identification scheme for upcoming talents in the fashion industry.

New Generation offers funding for upcoming catwalk designers in order to offer them an opportunity to showcase their collections on the BFC Catwalk Show Space. Other funding includes presentations and exhibition spaces for young UK-based designers with a goal to expose their talents to international press and buyers. This year there were 3 Catwalk recipients of the spring/summer NEWGEN sponsorship that were showcased at London Fashion Week in September 2012, namely Simone Rocha, JW Anderson, and Michael van der Ham. Two of these three, Simone Rocha and Michael van der Ham, are of particular interest because of their feminine lines, and expressive designs.
Simone Rocha
Born in Dublin, 1986, Simone graduated with a BA in Fashion from the National College of Art and Design. She got her MA at Central Saint Martin’s in 2012. Simone presented her first major collection, the S/S and A/W11 at London Fashion Week. Her style is all about feminine and romantic tendencies with a twist of strength and modernity, and her designs are meant for women who like to dress in gorgeous clothes.

Michael van der Ham
Originally from the Netherlands, similarly to Rocha, Michael has an MA in fashion from Saint Martin’s. Michael has recently completed his first ever resort collection, and his previous 2009 autumn/winter collection was all about diverse and opposing elements, with 3D like collages of bright colors and textures. Michael is known his knitwear and chiffon pieces, and his custom made textiles. His designs are meant for those with a brave taste.
