Since you like to walk in nature and you take out your cell phone when you see something that motivates you for a photo, until you have conditioned your whole life and those around you to be able to live and photograph nature. To photograph is to transmit and express through the image, both currents, one modern and the other postmodern, transit the sense of belonging and the recognition of the human.
Nature photography is all that portrays a natural element, whether it is a living being or a rock. Its primary purpose is to capture the aesthetic part, and it is one of the most practiced disciplines within photography, among other aspects, because of all the subtypes it encompasses.
Within nature photography, you can find many subgenres. Let’s see a list of types of images that you can capture within the nature photography genre:
- Plant and flower photography
- Wildlife photography
- Underwater photography
- Macro photography
- Landscape photography
- Astrophotography
- Night photography
- Still life photography
Just as other types of photography serve their specific purposes, nature photography helps share, raise awareness, love, and enjoy. Nature photography serves as a means of divulgation because it shows places to be admired and protected, it also helps to tell stories, it serves to make us notice the details, it serves to surprise us with its flora, fauna, and landscapes, it serves to admire the meteorological phenomena.
Other people use it as an excuse to go to places with inadequate cell phone coverage and be able to disconnect even more. But, alone, it gives you many moments of reflection, of asking yourself many things about the landscape that I am observing and enjoying, and I love that.
Contact with nature has a therapeutic effect; outdoor life produces a general improvement in people’s health. Nature doesn’t just offer benefits when you’re in it, to begin with. Seeing photos of that last getaway or natural scenery improves cognitive functioning. Nature captures attention in a bottom-up manner, which helps replenish top-down directed attention skills.
Looking at nature photographs increases concentration and memory, reducing stress. Stress is not only the enemy of our health; it also affects future generations, as it damages our genetic material. Stress has multiple manifestations in our physical condition, such as insomnia or hypertension. Numerous studies link the reduction of cortisol (the stress hormone) with contact with nature or access to landscape images from the office.
Contemplation would be the natural state when viewing these images. Being surprised by the beauty and the overflowing natural environment allows one to ask questions about life or oneself; it will enable one to be aware of the moment. In this sense, a landscape can evoke happiness and a sense of belonging when the person looks from the pause, observing the nuances of the natural work of art.
According to evolutionary psychologists, people generally prefer images that correspond to the African savannah, where humanity arose. In general, people do not like to see thick vegetation, which is intimidating, or a desert, where there is no food. Instead, an open space of lush grass, with clusters of trees and shrubs, a water source, diverse vegetation including flowering and fruiting plants, and a clear view of the horizon in at least one direction is preferable.
