There have been countless studies that have shown that creating a positive environment for employees will ultimately affect their productivity, their performance, and their overall happiness at work.
And the happier your staff, the higher the chance they’ll continue working there, and the more successful the business can become.
But unfortunately, a happy office culture doesn’t just happen by chance. It’s something you need to put a lot of time and effort into to ensure it’s effective. With that in mind, here are a few things you can do to improve happiness in your workplace.
Work/life balance
One of the most effective ways of increasing happiness in the workplace is by reducing the amount of stress. How can you do that? Creating a more relaxed work atmosphere will help ensure lower levels of stress which prevents them from getting burnt out.
But the most effective method is simply by encouraging your employees to prioritize having a healthy balance between their time at work and the rest of their life. You can also ensure everyone is equipped with the right equipment to be comfortable at work, whether that’s through giving advice on the right desk and chair height, to providing employees with the latest ergonomic mouse to prevent wrist pronation and stress on tendons.
Start by asking team leaders to ensure they always allocate appropriate workloads for each employee, and also check that they take their time off for holidays. While it’s obviously important your staff knows you value their hard work, you need to remind them that you also want them to have a rich and fulfilling life outside of work as well.
Create the right environment
Just like advertisements that create an emotional response from consumers have much more influence on them than the ad content, it’s important for employees to feel cared for at work. Otherwise, they’ll be much less likely to feel loyal to you, your company, or the rest of their team.
In order to create a happy and caring office environment, it’s important that each and every staff member understand that their contributions are valued and necessary and that you care about them. As humans, we all listen to how we feel and respond in kind. That’s why respect, honesty, and compassion from management can go a long way towards the creation of a truly happy and productive workplace.
Embrace employee diversity
When you hire people from a diverse range of ethnicities, regions, abilities, and social statuses, they each bring something different to your work environment. They will each have a unique perspective, with fresh ideas, and new ways of solving a problem. This is why the individuals in your workplace can obviously have a huge impact on the happiness of the environment as a whole.
Diversity helps build a solid culture which helps your business in the long term because when businesses are accessible to everyone, they ultimately bring in more customers. Therefore, ensuring your workforce is diverse and inclusive is no longer just a quota that needs to be satisfied, but rather it’s a global outlook to problems which all modern businesses should be following.
Less micro-management
Once you’ve built your own business yourself from the ground up, it can become quite difficult to abstain from micro-managing your staff. But it’s still important to learn how to reduce how often it happens.
Not only will less micromanagement help your staff feel more trusted, but they’ll also take more pride and ownership in all aspects of their work. Employees who are supported by management are much more likely to continue working for the company as they feel more relaxed, confident, and happy. Once employers realize this, their micro-management habit will eventually disappear completely.
Always give thanks
When most employees decide to leave a company, it’s because they’ve become unhappy, disenchanted, and wholly underappreciated. This often stems from not liking how their boss or other management figures treat them, they’re no longer feeling engaged with their role, or they’re not learning anything new. In fact, it’s actually pretty uncommon for the best employees to leave solely over how much they’re paid. This is why it’s so important to verbalize your tanks whenever your staff does anything right.
Every success should be rewarded in some way, even if it’s just their name mentioned in the company newsletter or a pat on the back in front of their peers. Simply by giving thanks, you can encourage teamwork while helping create a positive workplace culture and working environment. It costs nothing to say thank you, but public recognition is so important whenever a job has been done well.
Focusing on a happy work environment matters because focusing purely on benefits is no longer enough. Simply by creating a positive workplace for your employees, they’ll be happier, productivity will increase, and your business will be rewarded with a better bottom line.
