Congratulations! You’ve worked hard for what seems like an eternity and now you’ve got your long-coveted degree in your chosen field and you’re off to live the rest of your life as an adult, but where exactly do you start?
Once you’ve shaken hands and received your diploma, that’s the end of the hand-holding quite literally. Now you’ve got to make all the important decisions yourself and- even worse- deal with the consequences. The transition from student to fully-fledged functioning adult can often seem a tricky one, and oftentimes graduates can put a lot of pressure on themselves and expect too much too quickly. It’s important to take a breath and remember you don’t need to be perfect straight away. Here are a few simple tips that will help you along.
There Are No Rules
You might think there’s some template for living an adult life that you have to stick to, but in reality, there isn’t, especially in the twenty-first century. There are so many careers to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to focus on first. Sure, there are your typical office jobs, but you can also work freelance, from home, or from wherever you like. It’s important to think and consider what method might work best for you, but don’t feel guilty if you don’t know right away, or if what you want to do isn’t necessarily considered typical or usual. Your twenties are a time more than any other for experimentation, finding out what you like and what you don’t, and that takes time and effort to do. Just remember that everyone’s path is there one, and that no-one follows the exact same one. Yours may twist in certain which in which your friends and colleagues do not, and that’s OK. You need to traverse it in your own personal way.
Adult Concerns
Now you’re not living under the comfortable, safe blanket of college life, you’re going to have to face up to the many, many responsibilities that come along with adult life. This can seem overwhelming, but try to take things one step at a time and you will quickly find your way. For example, keeping track of all the bills can seem daunting when you move into your first new place, but there are a number of apps and tools which can help you with this. Furthermore, if you’re a driver, you should know who to contact if you get into an accident which wasn’t your fault. If you drive a motorbike, for example, you might look for a San Diego Motorcycle Accident Attorney or something similar in your area. Drivers will often try to take advantage of younger, experienced people they are involved in an accident with, so stay clued up and don’t let yourself be pushed over.
Network
So often these days, great jobs are found through who you know as well as what you know, but you don’t have to be heading out to advertised networking events at every possible opportunity. Simply stay inquisitive and ask people you meet about opportunities, vacancies or anything else you might be interested in. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.
