Whether you’re a beginner photographer or a professional, you have multiple options for your camera. While it can be intimidating at first, the large variety of camera lenses allows photographers to accurately select the best lenses depending on the purpose, size, price, and so on. Here are the most popular camera lenses, what type of photos they’re best for, and when you should use them:
Standard Lens

This versatile lens often comes with any DSLR or changeable-lens camera. Since it has a similar viewing angle to your eyes, the standard lens is a simple and easy choice. These are effective for shooting anything from landscapes to portraits. However, the standard lens does not provide the best results for anything outside of close-to-medium distance. If you are limited to only carrying one lens, such as when you’re travelling, the standard lens would be the best choice.
Wide Angle Lens
Wide angle lenses have three classes: Wide, ultra-wide, and fisheye. While all three options are popular, the signature fisheye effect is recognized by the increased curve of straight lines. The wide angle lenses are great for photographing landscapes because of their expansive angle of view. A wide angle lens has a focal length between 24mm and 35mm, whereas the ultra wide angle lenses cover a focal length of 24mm or lower. Like the fisheye lens, ultra wide angles lenses can result in a perspective distortion that can be minimized or corrected.
Telephoto
This lens is best used when you want high quality photos of far subjects. Telephoto lenses are often used to photograph anything the photographer can’t (or doesn’t want to) get close to, like wildlife or sports. It can also isolate the subject, such as one face from a crowd of people, and focus on it. On the other hand, shorter telephoto lens can be used to shoot detailed portraits that make your subject stand out from the background.
Macro
The macro lens allows the photographer to single out tiny details and enhance them. They excel at revealing textures and other features that are naked to the human eye since they have focal lengths between 40mm and 200mm. If you’ve seen a detailed photo of an insect, for instance, it was most likely taken with a camera using macro lens. This lens is most effective for any extreme close-up photography because they produce a 1:1 image.
