One thing I learned as a soccer fan is that it doesn’t matter how you call the game. No matter if it’s football or soccer, you can find fans all around the globe. Back in the early days (you know that weird time before the Internet), the only option to satisfy your soccer love was if you went to an actual game or if you played yourself. It goes without saying that besides the usual soccer, I’m also a big fan of soccer video games. And the best thing, thanks to the performance boost of mobile devices, you can play top-quality soccer games on your phone as well – high-quality 3D graphics included.
So, as from one soccer fan to another – I decided to do some research on what’s currently hot in the mobile soccer games world. I found a couple of sites with soccer games, but the one that caught my eye is a nice Top 10 List that immediately gives helpful details about each game.
Inspired by the list, I thought why not contribute by writing my own pros and cons and a short description of soccer games I found interesting. I also included the game’s rating and the number of downloads in case that helps you with making the decision.
Score! Hero – Rating: 4.6, Downloads: 100M
Seriously, I was instantly hooked to this one. Don’t know if it’s the first one I played, but I think I genuinely like the overall game design. I’d even go far and say it’s one of those easy to play but hard to put down games. I love how you can compete for the World Cup against a soccer-crazed AI that will really put your gaming skills to a test. What surprised me is that game has actual levels, which isn’t usual for any sports game. But just because it’s uncommon, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. Each level feels new and fresh. Yes, it all about kicking a ball, but Score! somehow managed to keep me entertained for long hours of ball kicking. The fact I’m playing this one even today says it all.
Of course, it’s not all roses. I like a good challenge, but at times it felt as if the game is on the AI’s side – especially as you dig deeper. Challenge is great, but only if it’s fair. Unbreakable defense and goalkeepers that can jump from one side of the goal to other in an instant is in no way fun. Furthermore, daily challenges can feel like a boring chore rather than a fun activity thanks to the difficulty. After playing the game for a great deal of time, I decided this is the moment to find something more on the relaxing side.
Pros: Polished game mechanic, smooth controls, no need for a Wi-Fi
Cons: AI can be too powerful, losing a match is punishing
Overall: Extremely fun soccer game that can be a bit too hard at times
Head Soccer La Liga 2018 – Rating: 4.4, Downloads: 10M
I’ll be honest. Unlike the first game, this game has fewer things you can do. But, exactly because it’s simpler, you might rather turn this one on when driving in a bus for example. It basically has everything a good soccer game should have – fresh graphics, interactive gameplay and real-life soccer teams. Also, probably the overall game has a simple design, I didn’t encounter any glitches for the entire time I was playing. Naturally, that’s always a plus because glitches in a game are the number one cause of frustration and boredom.
Downside besides less diverse gameplay? It depends how you look at it. The game has only teams from the Spanish La Liga like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Atletico, Villarreal and more. Now, this is great, but for players who might prefer playing with English or German teams, this might be a bit offputting. If you don’t mind the lack of teams, then this is a great game to pass the time when you have nothing else to do.
Pros: Big head design is fun to play with, play with favorite players from Spanish League
Cons: Can’t get power-ups besides by watching adds or buying, has only Spanish League
Overall: A funny and entertaining game if you don’t mind either paying or going without the powerups
Stickman Soccer 2018 – Rating: 4.4, Downloads: 1M
If the first game in the list is 100% soccer experience and the second is more about relaxing gameplay, Stickman is all about pure fun. Again, this means it won’t be for everybody, but I want to give more options with my reviews instead of obvious games like Fifa or PES. And finally, whoever said soccer has to be serious and dramatic? It can be extremely funny and dramatic at the same time. Instead of the usual player design, developers decided to go with simplistic stickmen and boy, does it pay off – there’s just something hilarious in this game I can’t quite pin down. Big Head players and heart-stopping, fast-paced gameplay that will challenge every reflex and skill you have. And most importantly, it’s sure to provide a good laugh.
I won’t say the controls are bad because they aren’t. But they do feel a bit sloppier in comparison to the first two games. It’s one of those game controls that are extremely simple, but because of their simplicity, they might feel a bit limited. Also, the adds. Boy, they can be overwhelming at times. Not always, but sometimes they just ruin the fun.
Pros: Extremely intense for a simple soccer game, super funny player designs
Cons: Too many adds at certain moments, lags sometimes
Overall: A great game to play if you want a different kind of a soccer game
My Conclusion
Score! Hero is great if you need some serious soccer action, Head Soccer La Liga if you need something to kill time and Stickman Soccer if you want to try something a bit different. Luckily, in the day and age, there are tons of games to choose from so that anyone can find the perfect one – you included. Nevertheless, I hope my list helps you find the exact soccer game you’ve been looking for.
