Being part of a sports team at a young age is a lot different than joining as an adult. As a kid, competitiveness is not a factor, and the priority is to have fun. As a child grows, sports allow them to develop teamwork skills, adopt healthy physical habits, and become highly motivated. If they are passionate enough about it, they may even want to continue in post-secondary education and then professionally.
Joining a sports team from a young age can have a string of amazing benefits, both physical, mental, and practical.
1. Teamwork
Playing sports is one of the best ways to develop teamwork skills. A sports team will teach your child about equality, empathy, and how to work well with others. These are some of the most valuable skills to have throughout life and will help them become successful adults. When playing sports, all the team members are working together to achieve one common goal. Everyone has their role to play, with no one person being inferior to anyone else. This level of understanding is a hugely beneficial life skill.
2. Physical and Mental Health
Sports involve a lot of physical fitness, regardless of which one it is. Adopting healthy physical habits from a young age will set your child up to continue them later in life. Peak physical condition is required to be a successful athlete. Physical activity also gives you more energy and makes you feel good. Since young athletes have so much passion for their sports, they are also unlikely to engage in unhealthy activities like heavy drinking, smoking, or eating too many sweets.

The financial stresses that will come from future student debts are a huge concern for families. The great news is that if your child is passionate about a particular sport, they may be able to get a sports scholarship when they finish high-school. They aren’t super easy to get, so starting sports from a young age will give them the time to build up the confidence and the skill needed to turn the heads of recruiters. Going this route will get them one step closer to playing their sport professionally, which is a massive achievement for any child!

Being part of a sports team means knowing that teammates are counting on you. Not showing up for a game or missing practice isn’t just doing you a disservice but also letting the team down. Instilling this in your child from a young age will help them become responsible and build accountability. Playing sports requires athletes to stay physically fit and healthy, eat well, and get adequate sleep to perform their best. On top of that, many school sports teams will not allow students to continue playing if their grades drop below a certain level. Having this pressure will motivate them to do well academically as well.
