Technology has changed our lives in so many ways. It has improved our standard of living, it has helped increase our average life expectancy, and most importantly it has helped us build a better society. Then why do people still keep asking whether technology is a boon or a bane?
Well, the basic idea behind developing a particular technology has always been benefiting the humankind, in some way or the other. But when there are 99 reasons to feel grateful for the various technological marvels that the experts have made, there is also a reason that makes us question the role of technology in our lives.
Take these following things for instance:
- Cell-Phones:
The invention of cell-phones has revolutionized the entire way of communication. People can not only connect with a person on the other side of the world instantly but can move freely while having a conversation. 50 years ago, nobody could even think about such technology. Now, with the introduction of smart-phones, people can accomplish a range of things with just a few taps on their phones.
However, one cannot simply ignore the fact that cell-phones have also caused some negative changes among the majority of its users. We are talking about reduced attention span, increasing road accidents and building ignorance towards the reality. These things were not intended when the developers first developed the cell-phones, but we all know what it has done to us.
- Worldwide Web:
The internet is considered as one of the greatest inventions of the modern times, and over the years, it has proven its worth as one of the most useful gifts of the modern-day technology. As an internet user, you may already know how potential the internet is. It not only connects you to the world, but it also gives you access to loads of information, which can educate, inform and entertain people at the same time.
But, it has a downside as well. According to the recent reports, the most popular social networking site on the internet allegedly shared its user data to an analytics company in the UK without the knowledge of the users. This displays how vulnerable internet security is. In today’s date, where the majority of the people stores their confidential data on the internet, news like this only gives us a taste of reality which we choose to ignore most of the time.
- Artificial Intelligence:
The application of artificial intelligence (AI) is still at a very nascent stage, but soon it is believed to replace human employees across various industries. The concept of artificial intelligence is quite fascinating, as it tends to accomplish various tasks without the assistance of a human mind. This is believed to make human lives even more convenient with time.
You may have seen the AI robot, Sophia. She is just like a baby who is still trying to comprehend the things that are taking place around her. While seeing a humanoid talk and respond like humans may be fascinating to many, a conspiracy theory suggests, these machines may turn against the humans one day. It is quite possible given the fact that artificial intelligence is able to learn by themselves and develop their own persona.
Well, the fact that AI can bring doom to the humankind still lacks solid evidence, which is the reason why it is called a conspiracy theory, but the fact that technology is a bane to the humankind is not completely ridiculous.
For most of the part, technology is considered as a blessing to all of us. It has improved quality of life is so many levels. Be it healthcare, food-processing, academics or commutation – everything has become more convenient than ever, thanks to the advancements in technology. Looking at the present, we can only imagine how incredible the future of technology is going to be.
Over the years, a lot of good things have happened. We have found the cure to deadly diseases like Malaria, Rabies and many more, we have sent space mission (New Horizon) to Pluto’s orbit, and we have manufactured electric cars that don’t require any fossil-fuel. In short, technology has enabled us to achieve unimaginable things in the recent past.
But the question remains, shouldn’t we be worried, considering the fact that technology also has its own set of drawbacks. Well, none of us has seen the future. So it won’t be wiser to comment on the future of technology. But looking at the current scenario, we can surely say that technology has done more good than bad, or at least it was intended to do good things for the humankind if not for anything else.
